Project Update - May 2022

We are gearing up to kick off WEP’s Winter Works program for 2022, which will run during the irrigation off season from May until August.

KERANG WINTER WORKS 2022

We are gearing up to kick off WEP’s Winter Works program for 2022, which will run during the irrigation off season from May until August.

Winter Works 2022 will take place across the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID), with infrastructure upgrades leading to more efficient water delivery.

One of the projects we will be undertaking this winter is the replacement of an open channel that runs through the Kerang township. The existing channel will be decommissioned and a new pumped pipeline will be constructed.

The residents of Kerang and other key stakeholders have long advocated for these works, and we are pleased to be able to deliver them.

The works will contribute almost 1GL of water savings towards 5GL of planned works this winter.

In anticipation of Winter Works 2022, the team has been working closely with residents, businesses, and government agencies across the GMID. This engagement has been invaluable, and I thank these stakeholders for working so closely with us as we developed our program of work.

BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS THIS WINTER

The team is looking forward to kicking off the 2022 Winter Works program across the GMID.

These works involve large construction machinery and materials, which will need to be moved to different sites as work gets underway. Please take extra care on the roads during this time, as our oversized and slow-moving vehicles transport equipment to where it needs to be.

We appreciate your patience while we maintain and modernise the irrigation network in your community.

UPGRADES AND IMPROVEMENTS FOR KERANG

The Kerang works are some of the most significant to be delivered under WEP, involving the decommissioning of 8.5km of channel and the installation of 8km of pipeline, including in the town itself. The works will provide a more efficient water service to over 100 customers.

In addition to improving delivery efficiency, the removal of the open channel network will help to improve general safety and visual amenity within the urban setting.

Works in Kerang will run from May until September, with water available from the recommencement of the irrigation season on 15 August.
